I
RECEIVED A SEVERE SCOLDING LAST WEEK…
The scolding was from my own
daughter.
The scolding was about an
article entitled “Fact or Myth: Eating Raw Eggs Carries a High Risk of
Salmonella” READ IT HERE
You see, my daughter is a
microbiologist. And she violently disagreed with my conclusion. And she was
right.
Though my conclusion was
correct according to the FDA and CDC, to her being correct is not
necessarily being right. She made some very valid points.
1.
Though the
incidence of salmonella is relatively low and “it probably won’t kill you but it
will make you wish you were dead”. And there is a likely chance of relapse
since salmonella is an intracellular organism.
2.
There is an array
of other organisms that are associated with raw eggs.
·
Campylobacterosis- Symptoms typically include headache, muscle
pain and fever followed by bloody diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain, which
occur two to five days after ingestion and can last from three to 10 days.
·
Staphylococcus aureus - Onset of symptoms
usually occurs rapidly, and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, retching,
abdominal cramping and fatigue. More severe cases may cause headache, muscle
cramping and transient changes in blood pressure and pulse rates.
3.
Eggs come from a
chicken’s butt….
Just to name a few...
Just to name a few...
I tried to persuade her to
write an article on this subject but she “chickened out” (Sorry, I couldn’t
resist that)
Anyway, I will try to think
these things through and use a wider lens. Especially if it has anything to do
with microbiology.
My daughter has your back.
