Using Wrist Wraps When Lifting

Using Wrist Wraps When Lifting

I’ve had previous questions about the use of lifting belts and lifting straps but I haven’t had any questions about a very important accessory…Wrist wraps.

For a lot of people wrist wraps aren’t an accessory. They are a necessity. I have small wrists relative to the size of my arms and hands and without wraps (or tape) my wrists can be a constant source of irritation.

Your wrists are a relatively small joint and yet it is capable of movement in multiple directions. The downside of that flexibility is the fact that the muscles in your wrist are small (like those in your shoulder complex) in comparison the loads they bear. Your hands and wrists are what connects you to the bar (and the load on the bar) and are subjected to that load in multiple directions.

Wrist wraps are legal in every competitive federation and I don’t recall ever seeing a competitor lift without them. Wrist wraps not only protect your wrists but also improve your lifts.
